Greetings! You are probably wondering why I dedicate so much time to teaching and invoking thought about diversifying S.T.E.M. careers and academic programs.
When I was in college, I traveled to Ghana to teach students science and math. When I introduced myself to the class, the students were shocked. They never met an African American female scientist before. They were even more excited about how I implemented fun tools to help them learn the science lessons.
I realized that I wanted to do this for the rest of my life and the best way to do that was for me to earn a Ph.D. and continue my scientific training. When I went back to the United States, I applied to Ph.D. programs. Fast forward five years later, I graduated as the first African American to earn a Ph.D. within the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Florida State University.
I used that moment in Ghana to inspire me and motivate me to be the best person I can be as an African American women, as a scientist, as an advocate for diversity in S.T.E.M., and as Dr. Lataisia Cherie’ Jones.
I create STEM programs that expose thousands of students to STEM on a yearly basis. I even have a statue that motivates millions more!
Now, it’s your turn! Let's work together to create programs that will allow today's youth to explore STEM careers in unimaginable ways!
